Hands-on projects

Students complete “resume-quality” projects in every course, tackling real-world engineering problems in collaborative engineering team environments

Virtual Reality Surgical Simulator

Ninety-three percent of surgical complications are caused by error in judgment or technique. Much of surgical training is completed inside a real operating room on patients. This device intends to reduce risk, errors, and cost associated with current training methods. The device uses a virtual environment, a real drill, and artificial bone to simulate the drilling procedure for hip fracture surgery.

Social Media App

Social media platforms are susceptible to disinformation with the potential for detrimental impacts on personal wellbeing. The social engagement on this app increases and rewards the user for activity and movement. This app also does not center around friend groups. It detects the user’s current geolocation to interact with others, encouraging diverse thought.

3D Printed Bicycle

Re-imagining the construction of transportation vehicles. This allows for full user customization on size, shape, and style. This bicycle was made from nylon filament with 60% chopped carbon fiber for stiffness and strength.

Topology Optimization

Optimization tool for 2D structures. The app uses an iterative approach of Finite-Element Analysis (FEA) to maximize stiffness. Users can select the number of elements and loading condition to solve for an optimized structure. Select from a preset loading condition or the user can design their own. The project is coded in JavaScript and runs in a client browser.
