Topology
Optimization.
Explore how material distribution shapes the stiffness of a two-dimensional structure.
A demonstration of the existing browser-based optimization tool.
The project
Structure through
iteration.
Optimization tool for 2D structures. The app uses an iterative approach of Finite-Element Analysis (FEA) to maximize stiffness. Users can select the number of elements and loading condition to solve for an optimized structure. Select from a preset loading condition or the user can design their own. The project is coded in JavaScript and runs in a client browser.
How to explore
- Set the design domain.Choose the number of X and Y elements and the target volume fraction.
- Choose a loading condition.Select a preset loading condition or define your own.
- Run the optimization.Start the solver and watch the structure evolve over multiple iterations.
- Read the results.Follow the iteration, objective function, change, and elapsed time. Reset to explore another configuration.
The application uses the finite element method to search for the stiffest structure for a prescribed volume fraction and loading conditions. Its optimization method is adapted from O. Sigmund, “A 99 line topology optimization code written in Matlab,” Structural and Multidisciplinary Optimization (2001). View the method reference →
